Type designation for all models of Boeing H-47. The original Vertol designation was the Model 234.
Initially designated the Vertol 114, the first five Vertol / US Army prototype Chinooks were officially desginated YHC-1B. An additional five aircraft, to be built to production standards, were ordered by the Army in 1960 (followed by 18 more in 1961). These were designated HC-1B. In July 1962, YHC-1Bs were officially redisgnated as YCH-47A, and all HC-1Bs were officially redesignated as CH-47A Chinook.
