Dr. James Allan Jamieson Bennett joined the Vertical Flight Society on Nov. 19, 1943, as its 68th member and was one of its Honorary Fellows. Dr. Bennett also was an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, which admitted him in 1936 as an Associate Fellow and elected him a Fellow in 1940.  He became an Honorary Fellow in 1968.  He also held membership in other organizations.

Interested in many facets of engineering, Dr. Bennett held degrees in engineering, naval architecture, mathematics, physics, and aeronautics.  In 1930, he became personal assistant to de la Cierva and thereafter devoted himself to rotary-wing aircraft. At the time of his death, he was a visiting professor at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California.
