This is a Significant Operational milestone.
The Vertol 76 was the world’s first successful tilt wing aircraft; it received the Army designation VZ-2 in early 1956. It went on to perform the first complete transition from rotor borne flight to wing borne flight by a tiltwing/tiltprop aircraft. The aircraft had been rolled out on April 01, 1957. This was 11 months after contract award.
