Gary Neil Smith was an AHS Emeritus Member, having joined in 1962, and a member of the AHS Gold Circle Club.

Smith was born in Buffalo, New York, on November 16, 1935. He graduated from Canisius High School, then from the University of Detroit with a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering in 1960. He worked in the private aircraft industry for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and then worked at the US Army’s AATD at Ft. Eustis, Virginia, for 34 years, retiring in January 1992.

He also retired at the rank of commander from the US Naval Reserve after 20 years of service. Smith was a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Jerome Catholic Church in Newport News.

Mr. Smith, 81, passed away at his home in Newport News, Virginia, on April 4, 2017, after a four-year battle against pancreatic cancer.
