Sikorsky plans to offer it for the United States Army's Armed Aerial Scout program, along with other possible uses. The S-97 design includes coaxial main rotors and a pusher propeller, making the S-97 a compound helicopter. The S-97 is projected to undergo a program review in 2011, and is expected to make its first flight within 50 months. Sikorsky plans to build two prototypes of the S-97 as demonstrators. One prototype is expected to be used for flight testing, while the second is planned for use as a demonstrator. The first prototype is planned to fly in late 2013 or early 2014 near the release of the Armed Aerial Scout Request for Proposals.

The H-92 Superhawk is a military version of the S-92 in the utility transport role, capable of carrying 22 troops. The H-92 can also be configured for specific missions, including Search and Rescue and executive transportation. The CH-148 Cyclone is a shipboard maritime helicopter variant currently under development for the Canadian Forces. From February 2009, the S-92 program was placed under Sikorsky Global Helicopters, Sikorsky's new civil helicopter business unit. On March 23, 2004, about 1918:34 central standard time, an Era Aviation Sikorsky S-76A helicopter, N579EH, crashed into the Gulf of Mexico about 70 nautical miles south-southeast of Scholes International Airport (GLS), Galveston, Texas. The helicopter was en route to the drilling ship Discoverer Spirit. The captain, copilot, and eight passengers aboard the helicopter were killed, and the helicopter was destroyed by impact forces. The flight was operating under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 135 on a visual flight rules flight plan. Night visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable cause of this accident was the flight crew's failure to identify and arrest the helicopter's descent for undetermined reasons, which resulted in controlled flight into terrain.
